The father of O'Grady was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was born in Detroit in Michigan. She was the child of Jim and Jan O'Grady, a financial planner. Her appearances in commercials prior to shifting to Los Angeles in 1986. O'Grady's career began as model and actress for commercials with Montgomery Ward. She made her debut on the screen with the romantic drama Having a Baby in 1988. She later played a regular role in the ABC Drama China Beach alongside Dana Delany. Other guest appearances include shows for television in independent film, as well as many others. Her first big role was as Donna Abandando on the ABC crime drama NYPD Blue. The role of the tall and blonde squad secretary was in the series from 1993 until 1996. Each of the seasons, she was awarded one of the Emmy Award in the category for Outstanding Supporting Performance of Drama Series. The ensemble and O'Grady were awarded an award from the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by the Drama Series Ensemble for 1995.
